I would have picked the mangoes. Only because they taste better. It really depends on how old the kids are. Mangoes are much softer and would be better for small children to chew and not choke.

depending on the age of the children, apples can be hard to chew if they are too young. i would go with mango, it's different enough that they would still like it and most people don't eat it on a regular basis, and also it's easy for any age to chew and swallow.

how about mango and ginger (candied ginger is even better), or mango and peach, or mango with a dash of powdered cardamon, how about adding some chopped pistachios in the crumble topping?
