Covering her cage helps, but I can't keep her under a blanket forever. She seems to think it is the greatest sound ever and she even dances a little while she does it. If it wasn't so gawd-awful annoying, it might even be cute. Help!!!!!

Moving the cage doesn't help. She is LOUD and even when she is 2-floors away the alarm sound is disruptive (especially at night). At first I tried telling her, "stop that." Now she just says "stop that" at the end of every "alarm" so having new things to say doesn't seem to solve the problem either. She has a huge vocabulary and she seems to learn new stuff to say every day. I do think that she is trying to get attention with her crooning, but she is out of her cage and handled OFTEN, so I can't imagine she is lacking for attention. Maybe I should try really hard to ignore her when she makes that sound? It's not easy though. The other problem is that she is so good at making this sound that I'm never sure if it's her or the actual alarm. I spend lots of my day smelling for smoke and pulling out the fire extinguisher. You folks are right tho...it is pretty funny.

It's not like I turn on the smoke alarm every day for kicks. And I don't burn every meal I cook. The alarm has only gone off ONE TIME since we got her over a year ago. That's all it's taken for her to learn this sound. Please don't insinuate that I've done something irresponsible or wrong by allowing my smoke alarm to do it's job.
Thanks to the folks who have had suggestions rather than criticism!

Many people have given you the suggestion to ignore her, and that is the only way to stop it. She will remember it though and may bring it up once in a while, but as long as you ignore her, it should stop for the most part. Even saying "No" or "naughty bird" is enough of a reward so that she keeps doing it. Literally turn your back on her and don't say anything, don't turn on the radio, don't do anything. Otherwise she will learn that you look her way, or perform some "trick" when she does it. Birds are quite amazing! They learn very quickly that certain words, phrases, sounds elicite certain behaviours around them. If she learns that you look her way when she makes that noise, she will always do it to get you to look at her. Or if each time she makes the noise, you turn on the radio, she will do it whenever she wants to listen to it. You need to reward the good sounds she makes and ignore completely the bad ones.

Well, I have had an African Grey and they are very intelligent.Once they learn a word or noise they will repeat it and there's not way to hush they up.My bird Jesse James always sung the song "Bad Boys" when he did something wrong. When he wanted attention he mocked the smoke alarm.Jesse James always danced when he did it because it got our attention faster.Maybe the only thing you need to do is show her a little more attention and let her out of her cage once in a while, but make sure her wings are clipped. Also give her a cracker every now and then.Good Luck

Greys do that! they love mimicking sounds they here. Try by teaching her a different sound. Everytime she mimicks the smoke alarm, cluck like a chicken or whistle a song. eventually she will pick up on this and will forget about the smoke alarm sound.

AG's don't need to hear a smoke alarm over & over to learn to mimic it. They can pick it up in an instant.
You need to teach her another sound, something that sounds pleasant & cheerful & if it sounds like this, more than likely your AG will want to learn it. They enjoy picking up sounds & words that have enthusiasum & cheerful sounds to them.

Mine did the same thing. She used her alarm call whenever she would see us outside of the house or about to leave. It drove me crazy too but I just ignored it and made sure I didn't set off the alarm again. It took about a month but she forgot about it and no longer does it. Now she yells YOU-WHO.

I am more concerned how he was able to pick up the sound of the Smoke Alarm. Does your alarm get activated too often?

HAHA omg!! My boyfriend's mom has an African Grey that mimicks the sound of the cat meowing, the delivery truck backing up, the phone ringing....and he has been doing it for lol 4 years now...I'm not sure how you can make them stop, it seems like once they start making the noise they never forget! Good luck!
