I have a 2006 Nissan Maxima.

When I put a CD in I have a chance that it won't work. It'll kick the CD out 2, 3, 10, 20, 50 times (sometimes more), saying "Check Disc" or "CD ERROR F2".

This happens with old, new, and burned CD's, so it's not the CD's themselves. This happens with CD's that never had a problem. I've noticed that the stereo tends to ruin the bottoms of the CD's, too - scratching them up something awful.

The drawback is the CD player is built into the center console, behind it, and the large LCD display (where the nav is), connects to it. Special buttons are built into the console to function with the CD player. Since the player is hidden, any stereo system I'd buy would be worthless since the buttons and display would also be behind the panel, and it likely wouldn't interface with the existing buttons/screen.

How can I replace it with a different system? Is that possible? Or can it only be replaced by another Nissan stereo?

It is still under warranty we replace the Audio units all the time see your Nissan dealer. I know of no other radio that will work with the Navi and steering wheel controls.

Well the Maxima CD player has its known issues first I would check and see if there are any service bullitins out from nissan for a recall and 2nd just take it to nissan... I guarantee you have less than 36k miles so its all under warranty. The system is very difficult to work on and work with so thats why the 07 maxima did away with that screen I would check best buy and circuit city and see if they have any aftermarket systems that they can convert on the 06 Maxima.
