The egg was laying by a tree. It was not in a nest. I have know knowledge about birds at all. And I'm sad to say that I did touch the egg. :( I will never do that again.

The egg was not warm. I am pretty sure it was laying there for some time.

If it fell from a nest, the trauma probably killed the embryo. If it had been on the ground for any length of time, it probably got too cool and the embryo is dead.

If you want to put it back in the nest, just in case, then you can do so. It is a myth that birds will reject eggs or babies that have been touched by humans. Wildlife biologists and bird banders take eggs (very briefly, so they don't cool), and babies from their nests all the time, and handle them with their bare hands. When they return the eggs or babies to the nest the parents never reject them.

What you can not do: Keep the egg.

It is illegal to have any native wild bird, its nest, its egg, or even its feather without the proper permits. So forget about incubating it. Not only is it illegal, if you could somehow hatch it, then you would have - illegally - a baby bird that would need to be cared for immediately. Also, forget about the suggestion to varnish it and keeping it as a decoration. Again, illegal.

You can check the law here: http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/about/faqs/birds/feathers.htm

ok, first of all the touching an egg- the mother wont come back is a mith, birds cant even smell or sent. back to the question: if you can find the nest put it in it, if you cant find it put it on the ground where you found it. keep an eye outfor it, then after a while,if the mom doesnt retern, take it to the closest shelter they will take care of it and retern it back to the wild.. hope it helps!!!!!!!

you should have left it alone... it wont live if you've touched it b/c the mother wont want anything to do with it. Never touch a bird egg... unless you have an incubator to put it in... but even then it would still need it's mom!!!
Where did you find it in your backyard?
I really don't understand why people mess w/ nature like that!

Try to put it back into the nest it came from. If that's not possible, make a new nest and keep it in a warm place. Pretty soon you'll be a mommy.

It is kind of sad but you can't do anything about it. Now that you have touched the egg it will never be accepted again. You'd best bury it so that no sparrows get to it.

Make a little nest and use it as a decoration in a flower Arrangement You might coat it with a clear varnish so it doesn't crack so easily.

DON"T TOUCH IT! LEAVE IT THERE! the mother bird may come back for it...but if you touch it....all the birds reject it because it has your scent on it.

If it is no longer warm, it is dead.
