Libaries usaully have geneology rooms. You can look up census the latest 1930. In 2010, they release 1940's. I hope you have more info then just your dad.
Also like the person above said, get the death cert. Then go to the county he was born and get his birth cert. Since you are his son you can get that info. Also you can do the same on your grandparents. From there www.familysearch.org can help.

http://www.familysearch.org
is a good place to start. You may be able to find your father using the information you have. Don't take what you find as fact however, even if you see it repeated again and again. All the users may have copied the same incorrect information.
If you find anything useful you may be interested to know that the LDS website has a free program called Personal Ancestry File (PAF) that you can download, enter in your family tree and keep on your computer. They also have tutorials available, so it's easy to learn how to use.

Looking up your past can be challenging. Follow with your dad's last name first...it will be easier. As long as you know his last name you can go to the forum sections on genealogy.com and ancestry.com for free and find others looking for their family trees too. It will help put you in contact with other family members looking to fill in the blanks. Maybe you will get lucky and someone will have another completed version of your family tree and will be willing to share. It's worth the looking into. Hope this helps and good luck with your search.

Hi, easiest way to start is by getting a copy of your dad's death certificate. This will give his date and place of birth, along with his parents' names. Use this info to find them in census records, getting vital stats records as you learn names and dates. It shouldn't take long to get back to your German ancestors if they came over so recently. Good luck!

Has someone in your family another copy of the book that you can make yourself a copy from to begin further research, if that's your aim? Is it filmed at LDS?
