Genealogy.com has message boards which are free. You can often find family members who are looking for the same or similar information there. I met two cousins and also learned some amazing things about one of my paternal great-grandfathers and many generations of his family through their boards. Another thing you can do is try to find out if your county of residence has a genealogical society, or the county you are interested in has a genealogical society. These can also be an invaluable source of information. For example, suppose you know that some of your ancestors migrated to Smith County, Texas. You could do an online search for "Smith County, Texas Genealogical Society." By doing something as simple as that I discovered the exact burial site of several generations of my father's family and also found a wealth of information in the form of biographies, stories and newspaper articles. Also, there is an online resource called the Handbook of Texas Online, which can be very valuable in searching for information.

Here's a website I just found which pulls many sites together. Check them out. I have used some fo those listed here myself, especially the Handbook of Texas.

Good luck. If you'd like, you can e-mail me for further assistance.

P.S.
I just noted the post of the other responder. If you get information from the Mormon website, be very careful to vet any information they give you thoroughly. Their information can be grossly misleading and incorrect. For example, information I found at their site listed my grandmother as being married to her nephew by marriage.
