So this girl recently threatened to kick my **** (don't ask, it's a long story) and she claimed she's a black belt in tae kwon do. First, I dont' know if I believe her cuz she spelled it Ty Kwon Do :P
Second, I'm no martial arts master, but say you're pretty tough and you've gotten into a couple street fights (such as myself) and kicked butt during those (well actually, kicked the girl in the face)..... am I screwed if I did happen to go up against her?
She's smaller then me, not that bright, and if we did end up getting in a fight I see it happening after alcohol has been consumed :P lemme know if I should fear her.

I think you can take her. I'll tell you why
A. The spelling is a big indicator. If the person is a black belt, and they still can't spell the art in question: That may be a problem. I don't know her though.
B. A black belt knows to limit speaking about the practice of Martial Arts. I'm unfortunately in a situation where people found out, but your goal is to avoid fights at all costs: She shouldn't be looking for trouble. The attacks are the last resort.
C. Everyone is right about the school. For all we know she might be from a mcdojo, and that means she may not be prepared as much as you think.
If you do end up in an altercation: If you are good at catching strikes, you might be ok. Just try to catch and counter. You are taller as well, which may give you the advantage of keeping her far from you.
If you can, try to avoid it, or get some help from authorities, et cetera...

I'm a second degree black belt and have been in Taekwondo for 7 years.
a common misunderstanding. a black belt doesn't necessarily mean you can kick someones ***. it means you're a dedicated student and its a mark of distinction. it shows an immense amount of perseverance. but it does NOT mean you can kick everyones butt, just like being in a few street fights doesn't mean you can kick her butt. but if she does believe that she can kick everyones butt just because she's a black belt, shes in for a rude awakening in the near future, should she go around picking fights everywhere. one thing i can guarantee you is that (assuming she actually earned the black belt, which really depends on what type of Taekwando she was taught [yes, there are several types]) she will fight differently than the other people you've fought.
Jackie Chan once said: "the first line of defense is always RUN." now, you can take this to mean run around in circles until she gets tired, or avoid fighting. personally, i like the latter of the two.
and it will be a lot easier to fight if you are sober.
to your spelling question, she could have just had a brain fart. a silly mix up. and there is more than one way to spell it. that, however, i do not believe is one of them, but i could be mistaking.
and just out of curiosity, what is the disagreement over?
and bonecrusher over here doesn't know what the fcuk hes talking about. Taekwondo most definitely has take downs. not to mention flips, pressure point manipulation, ground grappling (basically wrestling) head locks, and about 8 different weapons. rest assured, people properly trained in Taekwondo can defend as well as attack. and if anyone believes otherwise, i will take them down myself.
to matty G (sorry for all of my critiquing, but some of this really pisses me off) there are some forms of martial arts that actually have pink belts, so thats kind of an....empty(not sure if thats the word i'm lookin for)...diss. but the part about not underestimating your opponent is completely true. thats one of the first ways you'll get pummeled(sp?) on is by underestimating. if you have to go in with some sort if jugement, go in with the thought that she has the advantage. shes better, faster, stronger whatever. the worst thing that could happen ( if you don't consider overdoing it a bad thing) is that you're right and you went at it with all you have.

Well, if she spelled it wrong, that the first clue. Second, tae kwon do is an martial art that emphasizes punches and kicks, but kicks mostly thats all they practice and learn. There is no takedowns or wrestling in tae kwon do, its all stand-up striking.
If she is smaller than you, then if you do fight, rush in and grab her and take her to the ground and fight her there. If you rush in fast enough, no matter how much she knows about kicking and throwing punches, she won't have a chance to do any of it as you close the distance between where your too far away for her to hit you and your too close for her to hit you. Once you've clinched her, then throw her to the ground, get on top of her, and punch away.
See, the thing is, once you get her to the ground, any tae kwon do training she may have will be worthless!!!! Tae kwon do is a discipline where you learn to fight while standing up. Take her to the ground and she won't be able to use anything she was taught.
And since your bigger than her, and probably stronger because of it, you should be able to out-wrestle her once you both get to the ground.

First rule in fighting full contact is that never under estimate your opponent.
The only why you or her will ever know for sure is by actually fighting each other or watching her fight someone else first for your advantage. That way you can know alot from a different point of view.
I had a person come up to me and tell me the knew Akido and acted like they where going to kick my a*ss right on the street.Little did he realize is that I was in Zen do Kie Karate. When he found out was weird because I met up with him in a tournament where all other martial arts joined to go against each other.Come to find out I was a 2nd degree green belt and he was a white belt.As I walked by him I looked him in the eye and he quickly turned face.
This is why i say never Under estamate.
Still you can't judge by the color of the belt either because I was winning against Guys who where higher rank then I was in spareing(brown belts).
Make a joke and ask her what she is....Pink belt?"

I would say NO if she can't Even spell the name of the Martial art she's taking Then I'd say she's lying and she just wants to either scare you a little or look good.
Ask Her To Name Some Stuff Like five basic Kicks
like the Front kick Back kick Side Kick Roundhouse kick and spinning Back kick
or ask or the phone # of the School she supposedly takes it at or have one of your friends do it for you!
I hate people who fake as Martial Artist

Why bring yourself down to the level same as the idiot you're talking abt. To avoid all fights at all cost is still the best bet that you will not lose.
The word Tae kwon do is a direct translation. Although tae is the most commonly used as the right word, i believe there are still places that spell them differently.

Lol, dont worry :D There is a very simple solution to this. If she IS a black belt and tries to use her fancier moves, just step back and then hit her when she lands, if doesn't fight that way, well, it seems like you have yourself all handled (LOL :D). And btw, Tae Kwon Do is a almost purely defensive style, so dont worry about it. :)

1) I have no way of knowing if she is lying, but most black belts know how to spell the name of their art.
2) It depends on the type of school she attends. If it is a McDojang, she may not be that good.
3) Why do you want to fight? There is no way to win. 1 or both (probably both) will be injured. ! or both (Probably both) will be punished. Getting injured & getting punished are losses in my book, but maybe that's just me.

with TKD odds are that if she wasn't a black belt she would be a much better fighter than she is now.
TKD point sparring tends to make people worse fighters and they make mistakes. it is pretty much like "martial tag" where the first person to hit wins, irrespective of the most important things like power and defense and counter punching.
charge in on her and she won't be able to deal with your level of aggressiveness. kicking is not a good idea in this situation, get in close and she is in trouble.
