The same way Church's Chicken does.

It's a name, and in no way is owned by the followers of Jesus...for those of you that can't figure out the sarcasm above.

The Greek Ekklesia means"called out" or "called to assembly" and the English word"church' comes from that through the Latin ecclesia. The Buddhist Church of America uses the term church in its popular modern sense of some sort of religious grouping without tie- ins to Christianity.
At least(to my knowledge) Scientology does not claim to be Christian or "the finally reavealed true form "of Christianity which so many other modern inventions and movements that have nothing to do with the Creeds or Historic Christianity do.A thousand years ago,in Europe the phrase "the Church" could have only meant the Catholic Church.

Christianity does not have a copy write on the word church. There are many churches that aren't Christian. If you have a problem with Scientology being a church you will have a problem with the two Churches listed below.

Funny you should ask about Scientology because I asked a question earlier about a philosophy a friend of mine has and he was in Scientology big time a while back. That is where he got his philosophy.

A church is just a group of people with similar beliefs. The word predates Christianity.

Christianity is the only religion that believes in the divinity of Jesus Christ. Scientologists don't consider themselves Christians.

A "church" is a body of believers with a like interpretation. With that in mind... I call Darwinism, evolutionism, humanism, scientology... all of them are religions, and can therefore have a church of believers.

The word "Church" has more than one definition, a congregation, any building of public gathering for religious
purposes.
It's not exclusive to only Christian worship.
