and if so, is it bad to eat the rusted food?

Acidic foods like tomato sauce, etc. will cause a chemical reaction with iron cookware imparting a not so good metallic taste to the food. I don't think it would harm you, per se, but, I wouldn't eat out of it everyday just because of the taste. It will also cause your iron cookware to rust faster because it strips off the oils that build up when the cookware is properly seasoned. However, some people swear by iron cookware for cooking steaks, etc.

Only if the pan was rusted before cooking or left (stored) in the pot. I wouldn't eat it myself.
