They are wonderfully goofy dogs with the grin to prove it.
Loyal, loving (lap dog if you let it) Strong willed and lots of energy. They need to be socialized and trained by people with the time and love for that breed. Exercised daily!
They have a bad rep. b/c of owners not being responsible (and to address the person that say other breeds don't bite....well you need to do some research..the family dog..whatever kind..has bitten children lots of times and that was due to irresponsible owners )
If you are getting a pit/mix be responsible and spay/neuter your dog. with the right socialization, training,& exercise you will have a great pet!
mine is a house dog and loves it!

As a person who has had several pitbulls, starting years ago before the got a bad rap. They can be the best dog you ever had. Most people who have bad opinions of them never owned one. Also they are not violent at all. There are bad people who train them to fight and be violent and those people should be held responsible for the dogs actions. I have never seen a pit attack when it is with gentle people.
Also I have two daughters that have problems around dogs, they can make the sweetest dog growl at them. So to all those parents out there, if you don't want your child to be attacked by a dog, not just pits, do your job as a parent, keep them away. I don't allow my children to be around certain dogs and when they are allowed to play with dogs I tell them to never stick their face into the dogs face because the dog thinks you are being aggressive and will bite. Alot of children get bit by pits because the parents didn't do their job. And I know some people will tell you stories of pits attacking when they are running around on the streets. Once again it is the owner of the dogs responsibility to control his animal. The owner should be held responsible.

I have a pitbull he is the most happiest dog you can know! He goes up to everyone tail wagging, happy as can be! socialization is the key to having a great pitbull. I started to train my pit pup when he first came home. 6 weeks, he was walking around the house with a leash on so he could get use to the weight of it.My puppy looks like a boxer a lil bit i am asked what he is and i tell them hes a pitbull. Boy do i get looks. Pitbulls are not born mean, its the people who do not socailize their animals with alot of people and dogs.Good luck and here is a website that helped me out ALOT! www.pitbulllovers.com GOOD LUCK WITH YOU PUPPY! give him a hug for me!

My wonderful pittie, Baby Blue, is the sweetest, most cuddly doggie on 4 white paws. He was voted the "coolest dog" in my old urban neighborhood and now that we've moved to the country, he is turning out to be a first-rate squirrel dog as well.
My dad (a retired professional trainer) was appalled when I got him - for all the "ordinary" reasons - until he saw how smart and charming he was. From then on, it was "You don't deserve such a magnificent animal! He should belong to ME!"
Oh. and a lot of notable people own - or have owned pitties -
Rachael Ray - has pitties
Helen Keller - owned pitties
Laura Ingles Wilder - owned pitties
And let's not forget Popsicle, the country's most successful drug dog. Or Weela - KenLRation's Dog of the year - for heroism. Hmm. And Dakota - a well-respected search & rescue dog - and then Sargent Stubby the country's most decorated war dog - who would even salute his superior officers.
So pitties are really good dogs - many of whom are owned by nice folks.

I just read your latest post - do two things please
1. Spay/neuter your pet. The most important thing you could ever do for him/her.
2. Obedience training. Start with a puppy class and work your way up to CD or even CDX or Utility certifications. Obedience is ESPECIALLY important for pitties - as they can be headstrong. Also, Obedience is a fun sport in and unto itself - a great way to spend time with and for your dog. It's also the basis for everything else - search/rescue, agility, pulling, hunting, etc. It all starts with Obedience.
Promise you'll do those 2 things - and you'll have a great family pet.

They certainly aren't dogs for everyone.
Then again, no breed is.
They are sweet, loving, and loyal (to any human in general)...when they're bred and raised correctly.
You said you're getting a pit bull mix. A lot of mixes can have bad tempers...depending again on the treatment of the dog. Don't forget to research the breed that it's mixed with...not just the pit.

Perfectly fine dogs for the right person. Problem is, many people aren't the right person and in fact are terrible owners, leading to tragedies and overpopulation. There's also way too many of dying them in shelters for this reason.
I don't own them because some tend to be dog aggressive and I have multiple dogs. But that's making an intelligent choice, and that I'm not the right person for this breed, not that it's a bad breed.

them selves can be a wonderful dog IF and that is a big IF ,
they are not inter breed to be fighters .trained to be mean/and attack dogs!
IT is the owners NOT ALL but the ones who fight them for drugs/money that gives them a bad wrap!!!
It is so cruel to hear people who want to crop the pits ears ,and as a vol animal rescuer i crinch when i hear or read this due to my knowledge of the dog fights that many have their dogs ears cropped for!!
IT is terrible and Such a abuse of these poor ole dogs!
I would suggest if you are interested in a pit bull ,then make sure that you find out as much as you can about the dog you are interested in like the parents were they fighters /?the people who are getting rid of it if they are breeders ?also if the dogs ears have already been cropped and also if they have scars on their faces from being in fights?
Bless their heart they are SO mistreated and misunderstood by those who fear them all!
Its the BAD owners to fear NOT the GOOD owners!
their are ALOT of good pit owners who really love their dogs and are also so appalled by the way many are abused for a selfish gain of their owners!
To pit owners who may read this and fight your dogs or trains them to be mean ,shame on you and get off your lazy Butts and get a true JOB!!
A real man or woman wouldn't expect a animal to do their job for them!

I think they are wonderful dogs but since they are mixed breeds it's irresponsible for people to raise them. Their intended purpose was to have size of a bull mastif and the jaw strength of a staphshire terrier. The result was a dog with lock jaw and hip dysplasia as common health problems. These didn't see to bother the dog fighters that they were bred for since the dogs were intended to be disposable and the lock jaw came in handy for the fights. However, since dog fighting is illegal the continued production and support of production of these dogs are inumane and irresponsible. I hope you are getting yours from a rescue and not from a breeder. They get such a bad reputation because the bites are so widely publicized. No one wants to report that a collie or English sheep dog bit someone they want to support the negative publicity of targeting pitbulls. Most people can not even properly identify a pit bull. I have seen people claim they were bit by pit bulls and it turnned out to be a Golden Retriever or Akita. People are so quick to think of the name that they neglect to properly identify the breed. I have never seen a mean Pit. Even ones that have been rehabilitated from dog fighters have been nothing but loyal and loving. As long as they are socialized, trained, and treated with affection they are fine. It's when people provoke them, deprive them of food, and abuse them that they attack out of fear.

Pitbulls are a type of dog encompassing several "bull" type breeds. Like all bully breeds and guard dogs, these dog can make wonderful pets and companions, but they require dedication and responsibility on the part of their owners to provide good management, training, and especially socialization throughout their lives.

Every pitbull I have ever met has been an incredibly sweet dog. I used to live next door to the friendliest pitbull on the planet. Mean dogs are determined by idiot owners, not by breed.
