My dogs eat on a round: Raw, Canned and Kibble. Their raw in Natures Variety and the Kibble and Canned is Merricks. Being that they are adults they only eat one full meal a day. But I am looking for some good treats for the morning and afternoon snack. We've tried many different things, but I haven't found one that they really like. Any Ideas!

Have you considered chicken.

About the recall list--- It is actually safer to buy the foods that were recalled now. There were three large companies that made hundreds of foods that did not recall. The FDA could not make them. So the ones that were responsible enough to recall (or FINALLY recall in the case of Menu Foods) at least did recall. Some never did and the government couldn't make them. Their tainted food stayed on the market. I don't believe purina ever did recall, did they?

My dogs love their liver brownies! I prefer treats that I make myself and therefor know exactly what is in them Also they get the treat before I leave for work ( the "Goodbye treat") and at bedtime (the "Night night treat"), perhaps the odd small treat during the day. To make liver brownies, get a pound of calves liver, grind it up in a blender, pour into a bowl add flour a bit at a time until the mixture is on the thick side. Line a baking sheet with foil, spray it with Pam and spread the mixture on it. Bake in 400 degree oven for about 1/2 an hour, and cool it thoroughly on a rack. Break it up into bitesize pieces and store in a ziplock bag in the fridge. Remember not too much liver especially if your dog has kidney disease. But a small liver brownie treat now and then is OK and your dog will love it. I also cook chicken for my dogs, for extra special training treats. My 2 big dogs get a Cheweez after each meal and the PitBull gets a Cheweez Stick after each meal, (the shape of her mouth doesn't let her do the rawhide chip very well so we keep those away from her). Hope this helps!

I am a veterinary technician. First, feeding your dog only 1 time a day is not recommended. They should eat at least twice. Feeding 1 time a day can incite a twisted stomach if your dog is a medium to large breed and they consume too much too fast. Even if your dog doesn't attack the bowl, feeding 2 times a day is better for their metabolism. The bulk of their diet should be a dog specific food. Your dog should be on a diet made specifically for seniors since you said your dog was older. A large breed dog is considered senior at 5 and a medium/small breed is considered senior at around 7. Check with your veterinarian's office first to see what kind of snacks they recommend. I applaud you for trying to feed your pet a natural diet. If it is ok with your vet, try any of the recipes in the Three Dog Bakery cookbook. My dogs love the pumpkin raisin bread. The best thing of all is that you can eat any of these recipes with your pet.

First of all, adult dogs should eat twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Puppies 6 months or younger should eat three times per day, as they are growing. If you want treats that are high quality (not by-products) definitely DO NOT go to your grocery store. Those treats are crap. I don't know where you live, but in Washington there are All The Best pet stores, which supply very good treats with vitamins. Look around your area for smaller, locally owned pet supply stores, as those tend to have better quality products.
