Actually, people in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and other Asian countries have known this for a long time.
It's only when the US media took up the story, that suddenly this is a "global matter".
The fact is, people die everyday in China due to consumption of some poisonous contaminated food or another. Just that they're covered up by the Chinese government.
China, with all it's economic growth potential, is still plaqued by 3rd world country mentality, with widespread corruption and people who have no moral considerations for others just to earn a quick buck. This willnot change for the foreseeable future no matter how rich the country may become.
I will never buy anything from China that could possibly affect my health (foods/medicines/toothpaste...etc) or safety (car tires...etc). I recommend that you do the same too.

China is NOT banning the "teams" from bringing their own food. The athletes can't because that is typical Custom regulations. Just like every country's Custom agents will confiscate all foods into the country without permit. But if you are talking about American athletes, then you are wrong. Because U.S. Olympic team is thinking about bring their own "supplies" into China.

I know that recently there was a problem with pet food because rat poison was used to "fill" the wheat used. I wonder if that got into other things.
But probably some political issue.
