I would start calling my friends and family and asking who has a traveling gnome. The same goes for those statues of geese that people dress up and put in their yards. I would be expected to take a funny picture of the statue, post it on line and then put the statue on someone else's front porch. I usually rotate this nonsense to my sister.

I'm so jealous! I want a garden gnome statue, but they're around $20-25 at Target and eBay.
You should give him a name and put him in your garden, yard, or porch.

I'd wonder which one of my funny friends has brought him to visit me. Then I'd enjoy his company for a while and I'd get the word out to my fun loving friends that the gnome wants to go home.

Haha. in high school my friends and I used to get drunk and steal dozens of gnomes, rabbits, frogs, or whatever we could find and put them on my one neighbors front porch because we hated her. I always wondered what she did with them....

First I would examine it closely to see if it is possible that there is something illegal hidden in it. If so, I would call the cops, just in case. If not, I would put it out by my driveway. If the person who put it there wanted it back, or it was stolen, then whomever wanted it could have it. If not, then it would stay there. No big deal.

take pictures of you spending the day with it. Then leave it back on your porch. Obviously it is on vacation. And whomever left it there will come back for it.
