I just got a cockatiel for the first time yesterday, and I'm not sure what and how often to feed it.

Feed it a cockatiel food mix that has both seeds and pellets. Feed it every day! Be sure to clean out the food and water bowl EVERY DAY to keep him healthy. Make sure that for now you're feeding it what it ate at the store/breeder's house otherwise it wont eat and will starve to death. Gradually mix in some of the new food with the old food and increase the amount of new food every few days until it is eating only the new food. I feed my birds dried fruit as a snack each night when I cover up their cages and fresh fruit and veggies at least twice a week. Some of my birds' favorites are apple chunks, bananas, mango, papaya, dried pineapple, shredded carrots, scrambled eggs (very high in protein and very good for them), green/red peppers, and dried chili peppers. I hope you love your new bird. If you need any more advice please visit http://www.cockatootrainer.com/newowner/

Veggies should be fed every day. Dark rich green in colour & brightly coloured veggies are the best. As a general rule anything pale in colour like ice burg lettuce or celery has no nutrtional value & too much water. Other lettuces are good, asian lettuces & cabbages, sprouts, leafy grassy things, fresh herbs, lemon grass, corriander, rosemary etc, fresh chillis.

Fruit isn't a natural diet & they can become fatties or end up with health problems so they should be treated as a treat only.

You can also do cooked foods such as rice, sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot, whole egg & shell.

And yes, please make the change over of foods very gradual. If done quickly it can cause health complications also.

I leave food SEED in my cages 24/7 and feed treats daily. I love my birds and want them love living here {:O) So they know when I call out Hellooooooooooooo Their treats are on their way LOL! @_@ So I say as often as you like. They are not fruit eaters but love any kind of whole kerel corn out of the can or on the cob itself, and losts of lettuce. I sprinkle all their trewats with KAYTEE HAND FEEDING FORMULA powder found at petsmart.
