If not, then why would we have to suffer the consequences of what "Adam and Eve" did? That's like punishing your daughter because of something her great grandfather did. Is it not?

note: This is coming from the premise that it's all true. I don't believe it is, but I'm going along for argument sake.

"Hey, guys, how are we going to pretend this god we invented is merciful when negative things clearly happen to people, and the poor are oppressed?"

"I have an idea! Let's flip the situation: everyone's guilty, so bad things are to be expected. Now, follow this particular god and he just might forgive you of something you didn't do."

Also, didn't god get particularly hostile and decide to flood the earth due to so much sin that was apparently infesting it? If so, then why is there still "sin" today? Was the earth repopulated with sinners after the flood? Sounds like a problem with the designer..

It'll take you for a loop until you learn to laugh about it and put the book down.

Jon: "Gift"? I can't recall the last time I was out shopping and someone jumped out from behind a counter, held a gun against my head, and told me that I had a "choice" and was free to choose the "correct" choice, or else be beaten senselessly for all eternity. Did I mention I was dragged into the store without ever asking to go?

first of all, no I should not be punished for my great-grandfather killing someone- however let me explain- I am not punished for the sin of Adam and Eve- I am responsible for my own sin, that is why I am so thankful that God sent His Son to pay the price that I could never pay. Can you sit here and write this question and believe that you have never done anything that would be called sin? If you say yes, I can say that- you just lied. I am not perfect, just saved by the grace and blood of Christ. If Adam and Eve hadn't sinned, I would have- I am not responsible for anyone but me, and you are responsible and accountable to God for your sin- not Adam and Eves.

What Adam and Eve did was let sin enter the world. If you look at family's today you will see that what the parents do the kids will do later in life. If the parents are bigots the kids will have some form of bigotry. So you Dad or Mom does a sin and you see it most often you will do that sin. Do you understand?

Those who refuse to repent will be punished for their own sins, not for Adam and Eve's. All Adam and Eve did was set a precedent, and by sinning, we demonstrate that they accurately represented what we would have done in the same situation.

we "suffer the consequence" of their actions because that is when "sin" entered the world. before there was a LAW, there was no sin. the law they were given was do not take from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. at that point they broke the law, sin entered the world. subsequently flesh sins and breaks the law. nobody is punished because of adam and eve but because of their own actions.
repent and move on. good luck. freewill for all souls.

As a teacher I hear this question about twice a week:
You are NOT paying for any sin of Adam or of Eve. You pay for your own sin. The only exception to that is if you commit a like-sin. Where Scripture says the punishment of sin will last down several generations, if you go back and capture the subject of the discussion, you will find that those generations continued to commit the same sin, over and over - thats why they also paid for the sin.
AGAIN: YOU PAY FOR YOUR SIN AND YOUR SIN ALONE.
That is what Gods Word says, but unfortunately people like to listen to man instead of to God.

A very good question. Yes it is silly for someone to be punished for the actions of a great-great- grandfather.
I'll sit back for sometime and read some of the answers, I'm sure that some will be interesting to read.

You are NOT being punished for Adam's sin (Eve didn't sin, she was fooled - it's in the book).

Adam was punished by becoming mortal, and in order for this to happen, he had to be modified. From what we now know about cell division, this means genetic modification, or his body would have gone on repairing itself indefinitely. As a result of this, you inherited mortality. This is NOT a punishment but a logical consequence of Adam having been changed. In the same way, if a pregnant mother takes drugs, her child will suffer, not because the child is being punished, but because it receives from the mother.

As for creation being changed, this was for Adam's SAKE not for his punishment. In becoming sinful and selfish, he needed something to show him his need for God, and a hard life does just this. We have to live with the changes Adam made, but this is not a punishment. The punishment for sin is death, and this is what hell is for.

thats a good question but i don't think that we are suffering from what adam and eve done we are suffering from what we do ourselves, but if you are wanting to know why we cant be in the garden of eden like they were it is because when they ate from the tree they new what good and evil were and god knew that we would to but he gives us a chance here to believe in him and do good so that one day we can go he didnt have to do that he could have left us here to suffer and not ever go to heaven but like it says god loves all of his children so he gives us all a chance and more than one i might add, this might not be the answer you are looking for but i hope it helps

Twinkle, Who is punished for the sins of their Father? Was Christ punished for the sins of David? Chrsit did take on the sins of the world but in himslef was he not considered sinless? We inherit sin and death but not through biology...Adam sinned and did receive the wages of a sinner that being death. Sin and death did enter the world and we do inherit both as a result of original sin. It is not passed biologicaly but is in the world. Every man does sin and every man does die and in this way we have inherrited sin and death. But each of us are sinners and do bear our own sin. Though sin entered the world through one man Adam so also we can say that eternal life also entered through one man Jesus Christ who does bear our sins.
