Its not just rappers, its everyone pretty much when they get an award. But many of these people are atheists and just say it because everyone else does. But those who are actually religious and thank God, do so because they recognize he has helped them to achieve their sucess. Without God, they'd still be dealing, getting shot at, hustling, car jacking, etc....
You always pay respect to anyone who helped get you where you are.

Sometimes it's simply viewed as a cool thing to say. the reality is that some of them don't even believe in God. but "first of all, i'd like to thank God..." is a catchy phrase.

Not only rappers thank God, so many other singers do too and of course so many people thank God? why? because you have to praise your heavenly Father. look at everything He does for us. He deserves thanks!!!!
