How do I go about this? Where do I start ?
Do I just need to buy an HD tuner?

All you really need is a over the air box, you do not have to subscribe to cable or satellite for HD programing. The model below has a HDMI, Component, as well as DD optical out and a pass thru.( Use Component for best video results. You will also need a antenna for over the air HD.

If you subscribe to cable or satellite you will need to get a new box from them.

As far a HD for DVDs you will either need a upconvert DVD player or a Blue ray or HD DVD player. given the market instability I say either get a Upconvert or HD DVD. Cost is Ok for both, Blue Ray is too iffy and expensive for me plus who knows if will last. Use component for best picture.

You don't need to buy an HD tuner. Since you mention satellite tv, the satellite company can provide you with an HD box.

As for DVD's if you want true HD pictures you will have to choose between an HD DVD player or a Blu ray DVD player and buy the corresponding DVD's. Regular DVD's are NOT HD.

You don't need any other box apart from the one supplied by your cable or satellite service provider. Be sure to request the Hi-Def model from them as well as the proper interface cables for Hi-Def operation.

The picture quality from your DVD player will also be much better if you use the component or if equipped an HDMI cable.

You did not say if the TV has built-in or attached speakers. If not, then you also need to purchase either a Stereo or Surround Sound receiver and speakers. (I strongly recommend the Surround Sound system)

Enjoy,

Call you satellite/cable provider. They have HD boxes and DVRs for a few extra box a month. Check the video inputs on your TV - if you have HDMI, get the box with HDMI.

If you want full HD get a box from your satelite company. If you want FREE local HD programming buy an off air antenna (not recommended)
