It represents the third "eye" on the forehead. It is not a mark of married women since unmarried girls and boys and men also wear them. The only people forbidden from it are widows. If an unmarried girl doesn't have it on...no big deal. If a married woman doesn't have it on...bad thing. Doesn't matter for men either way but widows NEVER wear it.
