People often cite "Not Without My Daughter" in R&S in an insulting manner to Islam, as though all Muslims behave like "Moody" in that film.
But do you know about Moody (Sayed Bozorg Mahmoody)'s side of the story? Do you know about his film, "Without My Daughter?" He hasn't seen his daughter for 16 years, and other Americans shown in this film claim that "Not Without My Daughter" was simply propaganda. Also, did you know that Betty Mahmoody was a convert to Islam?
I'm not trying to say that the Islamic Republic Iran is right - in fact, I'm the first to claim that it's an oppressive government - but stop citing propaganda like this film in order to insult Islam! It just makes you look stupid.

1. She wasn't forced to convert, she converted while in the US.
2. There is little evidence that she actually escaped as her book claims (or that she had to).
3. You people are idiots.

Samantha, to be fair, a lot of my close friends from college are Persian. You're right that I've never lived there, so I draw on their experiences. Anyhow, I do think it's oppressive - did you see the photo of the woman whose face was bloodied by police because she protested by not wearing hijab? Not cool.

For one thing she couldn't have been forced to convert to Islam if she lived in America because she had to option of divorcing him if she didnt want to convert. That movie has warped the minds of Americans as to the status of muslim women and women married to muslims. The depictions in that film are the reason my family is so concerned about me marrying a muslim. Initially we were going to live in his country and they were so worried I would get over there and he would abuse me and I wouldn't be able to get away from him. If Americans are so concerned for the "plight" of women marrying muslims then they should educate themselves to the changes in laws that give women almost more rights that it does men if there were to be a divorce. I might also remind Americans that our own country is full of abusive men who treat their women with no respect whatsoever and that many of them were raised in the same conditions, whereby muslim men are raised in the belief that their mothers hold the highest honor of esteem and abuse is not nearly as prevalent as it is here.

Yeah... I know him... poor guy...
I saw his side of the story years ago...
I'm gonna star your question just like FEZ said... BUT I don't agree with Iran's government being oppressive...
Haven't lived there? Don't judge it... NEWS is ALL crap...
The government has its flaws... but its better than being controlled by the west through a "king"... ALSO... kids mature and grow up... n figure out there's more to life than watching porn all day long, sipping alcohol, gambling, doing drugs, and hanging around naked in the neighborhood!
Believe me... most the youth in Iran think doing these stuff is freedom and its what everyone else in the world is doing!
The only reason they claim to be oppressed is that the government makes it extremely hard for them to do these stuff...
AND the recent news about arresting the so called youth! WELL... they weren't any ordinary youth... they were ppl who blackmailed women...
Rape them... tape it... and blackmail them!
I for one am glad that these ppl are off the streets...
EDIT:
Oh... n no wonder the guy who played Mahmoody in the movie never got to the A-lists of hollywood :D
Poor guy had the curses of every single Iranian following him for playing that role :D
EDIT EDIT:
Yes I saw that picture...
I also saw the video of a girl who got naked in public... not just taking her scarf off... NO...
She took her blouse off... her pants off... her bra off... ...
AS I said... most youth in Iran think this is how everyone else in the world is and that this is called freedom!
Also... pictures lie... alot... they are there to serve the needs of those who want to ruin the reputation of Iran...

I just want to add that in my opinion, there are not always 2 sides to every story...
Sometimes in life one side is more right than the other side and that's what keeps me going...
In my opinion in my own life, I am more right than wrong about what I have gone through and lived with and what I had to deal with...
And when the percentages get bigger on my side, that makes me right and the other person wrong...
But again, I am referring only to my own life, not yours...

You're right, there are two sides to every story. I read the book before I watched the film. Did he not prevent her from leaving? And what difference does it make if she was a convert to Islam?
