Hi all..I had a quick look through the previous threads but could'nt see anything exactly like the problem I'am having, apologies if I've missed it.
I have a 97 expedition / auto transmission and when I start it in the morning it goes into gear no problem. However, when you press down on the accelerator it's like your revving the engine in neutral then suddenly it's like the gear engages and it lurches since you have the accelerator down. You have to be real careful you're not near anything. Any ideas what I could go look for as the problem?

Thanks

You are having internal transmission troubles, somewhere inside the transmission there is a fluid leak or a sticking valve. You can try a fluid and filter change but I don't think it will help, if you do make sure you drain the converter as well as the pan, there is a drain plug it the converter, just turn the engine over by hand till you can see it through the access plug hole in the bell housing. If that doesn't help your problem is probably over your head and in need of professional help.

I have the same problem, same year expedition and everything so i feel that I am quite knowledgable.
I took it to the dealership and they said it was the transmission that was the problem and what was happening is that as the car is trying to switch between gears it has trouble catching onto the gear so therefore it revs up until it catchs. The reason it lurches forward is because the car is reved up high when it finally does catch.
I am not getting my transmission replaced yet and would not suggest that you do it either, they want to charge too much. When it starts to rev release the gas and let the gears engage then repress it and just continue driving. Just be careful with it when driving.

Hope this helps.

First off check to be sure your not low on transmission fluid. If not, then take your truck to a transmission shop, as it sounds like the rear main seal in the transmission is bad and if your truck is 4WD that seal keeps the transmission fluid from leaking into the transfer case. When the seal fails the fluid drains into the transfer case. Which will cause the symptoms your describing.

Sounds like the tranny is slipping and on its way out. Check the fluid and level. It should be red and not smell burnt. If that is okay then you need have the transmission diagnosed by a shop. You could have the fluid and filter changed. How many miles on the vehicle and did you regularly service the transmission?

I would start by having a reputable transmission specialist have a look at it, it could need a fluid filter change, or it could be a sensor, even the torque converter, a lot of shops will have a free external inspection, as much as $49.99 for a computerized check, good luck.....
