Good Career? how much are you making now and how long have you been working as an Engineering technician? Also, how many hours do engineering technicians normally work a week? Are there a lot of O.T.? I'm interested in either working as an electromechanical or electronics technicians.

I am currenly working as an ET , we currently have openings in Massachusetts for ET's and Engineers...

Hourly rates depend upon experience and education. My current employer only hires techs with engineering and associates degrees. Rates per hour low to mid twenties, 40hr/wk typical but some work 50+. I average about 42 hours per week doing R&D , benefits include flex time.

I also worked as an electro mechanical field tech for an environmental firm, started 1991 @ $10 - $15/hr ended 1999 @ $19/hr 55 to 65 hrs/wk. Since I was being billed out at $75+/hr I could work as much as I wanted. The problem is that always working long hours week after week gets old real fast despite the OT..... Did some EM work in a manufacturing environment as well , here straight time doing regular 40 hour weeks was the norm. In a manufacturing environment you are part of the overhead and aren't producing billable time. It is more likely that there will be several shifts of EM's keeping the lines going.

I was an Electrical Engineer and most of our Techs worked a 40 hrs work week. Unless there was an important project deadline they rarely worked OT. When they did work OT it would easily be 50-60 hrs.

Some companies operate round the clock or they need support for overseas, so you may have to work odd hours.

But now that I have moved into IT, I find that hours are no different and if anything they are even more demanding in terms of hours on the job. So I guess for any high tech job you should be flexible in terms of scheduling.
