My word, people, I am an atheist and a former teacher (currently a private tutor.)

I was just curious as to what others thought and I wondered if there were parents who would have their child removed from the class. Geesh, no need to get your panties all up in a bunch.

First of all, the primary criterion for whether a teacher is good or not is their ability to successfully teach the specific materials they are assigned to teach. As for a teacher's religion or lack of religion, I don't think a teacher's personal beliefs and values have any place in a classroom discussion or in an evaluation of their performance. I don't think my kids need to know whether my kids' teacher is a Druze, a Falun Gong, a Scientologist, or a Christian...or even an atheist.

On the other hand, as an atheist, I would feel much more comfortable having atheist teachers in classrooms to teach kids how to think rationally about things, how to properly understand science, and how to see through all the smokescreens and b.s. that believers use to justify their archaic myths.

I wonder if other parents regularly interrogate all potential teachers as to their religion.

I don't care, as long as religion or lack thereof is left out of the classroom. If I knew she was an atheist, I'd give her a knowing grin.

I would asked that teacher be given a raise. I really do not think it should matter in public schools.

After I left Catholic school, I couldn't tell you how most of my teachers felt about any god. As an atheist and someone who appreciates their freedoms, I feel that's how it should be.

as long as you're not promoting your atheism and dislike of religion and christians in general and that people evolved from a primordial sludge who cares? public schools are such a joke now and propagandize children into all kinds of perverted behaviors, hatred of America etc...that's the least of a parent worries.
