Someone gave us a copy of the classic Better Homes cook book only it was the bridal edition. It was a great gift! It has all the classic recipes with special sections on how to entertain, what you need in your first kitchen and how do cook a Thanksgiving dinner. It was great!

Or a gift card to a great restaurant so they can go have a dinner date on you is nice. Or better yet, take them out to dinner to celebrate.

I don't think people expect more than a card for their engagement! Maybe it's different here in the south...but we don't give engagement gifts. I know my fiances entire family gave us gifts for our engagement and I had no idea what to think. I think out of all of our gifts my favorite was a crystal cross to one day set in our home. It doesn't have to be something they can use right now, they can store it and wait until they are later married. I think a nice card and something they can put on a table to decorate their home is a nice choice. The thought is for sure the thing that counts here. :)

You don't have to give a gift for an engagement, but if you want to, wine is a good idea (if they're of legal age and wine drinkers!). I gave my friend a wedding planning book for her engagement gift and it was definitely well-worn by the time her wedding came around! Cook books are another good idea, or luggage for their honeymoon.

Engagement gifts aren't required, but you could get them a nice card.

i would not worry about getting them a gift for getting engaged. there will be plenty of opportunities to get them gifts. the bridal shower, bachelor/bachelorette party, and of course the wedding.

If you know them well, you should get them something sybolic of them, something they can look at and know you gave it to then to celebrate them being such a special couple.

If you don't know them so well, how about a bottle of expensive champagne and a pair of really nice glasses, just for them?

Coffee pot. They have nothing. They both live with their parents. I'm sure they can use it if they drink coffee.
