In trying to breed a dog down to the size of a chihuahua breeders select the smallest dogs. The smallest dogs are usually not the healthiest of the lot. After decades of this the breed ends up inherently unhealthy. Genetic issues such as skin problems, nervous disorders, bone issues and so on. In the effort to go small they also disregard issues like temperament, resulting in uninterested, aggressive or difficult to train dogs.

A lot of people underestimate Chihuahuas. Not all of them cause problems. Some of them are really sweet, depending how you treat them.

I have heard that A LOT of people have problems with purebreds. I have two chihuhua mixes (not the designer breeds...just dogs Ive found or rescued). They are great dogs...behave well and are 100% healthy. On the other hand someone gave me a small purebred dog (Chinese Crested) I got her when she was a pup...she is mean and is always sick. So, please try to adopt! They are better dogs in need of homes before their time runs out in shelters.

My old downstairs neighbor had a Chihuahua who was a big old can of crazy!!!! She totally acted all bipolar and one day she'd be licking you, and the next day she'd be growling at you and trying to bite your nose off.
Also, my roommate once pet-sat for a Chihuahua who did roughly the same thing. One second he'd be in my lap getting petted, and the next he'd be across the room growling with his ears back, then lunging at me with his teeth bared.
They're psychotic, I tell you.

I think the biggest people underestimate about chihuahuas is that because they are very small, they are very fragile and prone to injuries, sensitivity to heat and cold and broken bones. Also, if they get sick, they need vet care quickly because of their tiny size.
