You are right that more British Soldiers were killed by the IRA but that does not halt the argument that the Public feel that the Iraq was not justified because of lies made by the British Govt. there was support for the campaign against the IRA as it took place on British soil, much the same as the Falkland conflict was supported. So in summary, it is not the numbers that the public are appalled by, bad as that is, it is the circumstances of the deployment.

And Northern Ireland was directly a British conflict, it wasn't our government sending our soldiers to a foreign country. That's why people moan about soldiers being killed in Iraq.

Not counting the Police - UDR- or Civillians who were murded by terrorists.

So the IRA killed more British Soldiers than:

The Malaysian Rebellion.

The Mau-Mau Wars in Kenya.

The Suez Crisis.

The War in Aden.

The Falklands War.

Gulf War 1.

Gulf War 2.

Afganistan.

Well, the Irish troubles were loosely based around religion. The IRA is in itself a catholic organisation. (I mean no offence toward the Catholic religion as a whole, I hasten to add).
The IRA were terrorists who thought nothing of murdering innocent women and children.
The IRA would not show themselves and hid their faces in the main.
They would turn up in the dead of night and shoot people in the knee caps Etc.
They would pull women from their homes, shave their heads and pour tar and feathers over them if they were considered to be 'aiding the enemy' (British Army)
The IRA invaded other countries and set off bombs killing innocent people who did not even know of their organisation. Bombs made of nails going off in shopping precincts on the Saturday before Mothering Sunday is the main one I recall. Several children were killed buying a present for their Mum.
The IRA received money and arms from outside Ireland and the UK.
The IRA had no respect for democracy, the referendems held amongst the Irish people clearly said, they wanted to remain part of the UK. Like the Iraqi terrorists they wanted the Army out (peace keeping force may I add) as they considered them Invaders however they still took the money from the British taxpayer as Ireland was not financially independent.

Anyway, I can see why the comparrison between two terrorist organisations. Some also considered it to be a civil war in Ireland because of course you had the UDF (Ulster Defence Force) fighting the IRA. It took 30 years and the involvement of many (including Bill Clinton) before the peace process was agreed.
I don't know the numbers here but feel that the writer may be referring to the 36 UK soldiers recently killed and the subsequent discussion in the UK, rather than adding up the total soldiers of the coalition as a whole who have been killed in Iraq.

so far yes but that was over 30 years the Iraqis are catching up quite fast and British forces only been in Iraq for 4 years. Problem is IRA fight like coward and not want to stick around for fight with professional Iraqi Muslim insurgent not afraid to die as he think he is going to paradise and 70 virgins reward!

People dont moan about soldiers dying, thses are people whos lives have been cut short. They are not machines.
It doesnt matter where they have been killed, they have done so by doing their job/following orders and trying to help people. (which they are doing)
Try having family in the armed forces and then you can start moaning when they are killed.

You may be right, but these soldiers are in addition to those killed by the IRA, not instead of. Wrong exists in both of these instances. We can't bring back those who have died; we can prevent more killings though.

The IRA were trained funded and aided by Gaddaffi, who of course is now one of our Tony's best friends, so some soldiers got killed what the hell did Tony care as long as it put him in line for a Nobel peace prize.Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan dying, Tony crocodile tears couldn't care less he's never been to a soldiers funeral yet.
