yes nausea/vomiting is a known side effect of general anesthesia. keep in mind that nausea is a lso a common side effect of narcotics which are almost universally used for post-operative pain relief, so sometimes it's hard to determine what's actually making you nauseous. the good news is that there are plenty of good anti-nausea medicines we can give you if it should occur like dolasetron or ondansetron.

After surgery, one of the side effects of anesthesia is nausea and vomiting. Not everyone who had surgery experiences it but it applies to approximately 10 % of post surgical patients. You were required not to take anything orally the night before surgery (or few hours before) thus you actually doesn't have much to "throw" but just some fluids. The feeling of nausea and vomiting could also be brought about by post operative pain ( and oh may also be narcotic painkillers side effects) and could be also related to some patient's factors.
I underwent 4 surgeries - during the first and second surgeries, severe nausea and wanting to vomit (plus pain) are the worst feelings I had right after I woke up from anesthetic effects. The third and fourth surgeries were better as I was given painkiller shots right after regaining consciousness from anesthesia and was hooked with patient controlled analgesia (PCA), AND also received anti-vomiting injections and drip. So it was a better experience.

It can for some people. Before having surgery, they gave me a paper on what to expect following surgery from the anestesea(spelling?) Vomiting and crying for no apparent reason, and shivering uncontrollably were some of the side effects that i can remember. I didn't experience any, but I have a friend who has the uncontrollable shivering every time she gets put out.

I had a colonoscopy a few months ago and was asleep during the procedure.

After I woke up, I said to the nurse I was hungry and wanted to stop at Wendy's on the way home. The nurse told me not to, the worst thing I could do was eat anything fried, greasy or heavt. Just go easy the rest of the day, .

So, the answer is
yes" but it can be prevented.

Sometimes.

The medications that tend to affect people that way include narcotics and the potent inhalation agents (gases). Both of these are commonly used in general anesthesia.

Risk of post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) increases with younger age, female gender, history of motion sickness and type of surgical procedure.

We have some medicines that are fairly effective at preventing and/or treating PONV. If it's something that you're prone to, discuss it with your anesthesiologist.

It can, but depends on the person and drugs are used. That's why they tell you no food or water after midnight (or for at least 4-8 hours) prior to surgery.

yes general anesthesia can cause nausea. Its normal though and doesn't affect everyone. I've never vomited after surgery.

to some people yes. It happens to my mother every single time she has surgery. They can give you something in the IV to stop it from happening. You just have to tell the doctor about it first.
