Hey
My dogs don't do this, but one thing i have to say is DEFINITELY don't apologize and or give them a treat. that is the absolute worst thing you could do, because you are rewarding them for a behavior that you do not approve of. i know a lot about dogs and you've gotta trust me on this one. never say "its ok! or hey sweetie its ok , awww..." stuff like that. This will make your dogs know they are getting attention for acting in a winy mood, and you do not want that.
Oh, and the one above me, no offense to her, but that is awful to REWARD your dog for bad actions, and 'baby talk' 'roling on the ground' you do that to show your dog affection and praise when he or she is doing the right thing. If you want your dog to stop, never do any thing like that. I agree with m_turkoc that giving your dog a bone or chew toy before you leave so he has something to do instead of being bored while you are in the store is a good idea. good luck

Geeze I wish my dogs were more on the mellow side of a greeting. My Aussie pup(6 months old) who is an outside dog Will run next to the car and as soon as I open the door to get out she jumps in the car and onto my lap. Talk about heavy, the girl weighs 40 lbs. Its hard to contain a 40 lb ball of happy fuzz.
And my Mini Schnauzer. (8 months old) Thats another story. Even if I am only gone for 5 minutes she will meet me at the door and jump, dance, fall a few times, wiggle and whine whine whine. LOL Its very cute as I can just hear her saying "where have you been. I have missed yo soooooooo much." And if I dont pay any attention to her, which is what a trainer told me to do once, she will sit and howl and howl until I say hello, then here comes the wiggles.
Its awesome!
Sorry your dog pouts, maybe you should act like you are super glad to see her and get down on the ground with her and hug and kiss her. Oh and dont forget the baby talk. My dogs melt for that one.

well, i would say to bring your dog a toy, or a treat to leave with him in the car while you're gone. There's really nothing else you can do except leave him at home. Some stores will allow the dog in the store if the dog's paws don't touch the ground (as in having it in a purse or a cart). This is something you'll have to talk to the store manager about, though.

actually the reason for separation anxiety is that in nature when dogs are in a pack, the "older useless" dogs get pushed out of the pack. When you leave a dog some where without any interaction it believes it is being pushed out of the pack. The dog is testing his/her limits with you to see if it is still in the pack. Test me, your dog is not mad at you or sad, dogs can not comprehend those feelings for any period of time.

Yes, my dog actually sort of snorts at me like he's got an attitude and turns his head and won't "speak" to me for a could minutes. Then I bribe him with a treat and all is forgiven, LOL.
He also slaps me with his paw when I won't play fetch with him. He's sort of spoiled, I think...but adorable!
