You have just experienced what scientists term as Lucid dreaming, where you are semi to almost fully conscious in your dream, and can control your actions. Some lucid dreamers can even go as far as controlling their environmental dream factors.

Aboriginal Tribes in the Borneo Islands ( like the Ibans and Kadazans etc) use this technique to overcome fears. Their young are encourage to "face" their horrors in their dreams and never coddled to awaken from a scary nightmare.

In Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism they have very similar techniques of "dream yoga", where the student studies, learns, practices in their dreams for hours, but only several minutes have passed in real time. That is why in the pre-television times of India, China and the Orient, the ability of Spiritualists to memorise and advance quickly in the spiritual arts was so fast and so precise.

*hope that was helpful*

It's called "dream lucidity," being conscious in a dream. As vinslave said, Buddhist monks acheive this often through deliberate effort.

The article on Lucid Dreaming on wikipedia offers methods on how to do it.

Many people who work at this can do it... usually under the guidance of a lama or teacher in Buddhism. Don't be freaked out, it takes some people a long time to achieve the ability.

You were in a state of heightened awareness, or expanded consciousness. It is a spiritual state that is highly sought after, and I am happy for you. You would probably notice that you were quite happy or elated on waking up. That goes to show you were really elevated spiritually during the experience. I wish you more of it.

Chinese philosopher, Zhuang Zhu once dreamt he was a Butterfly fluttering happilly among flowers and trees. When he awoke he thought to himself, was he the sleeping butterfly dreaming he was a man or was the sleeping man dreaming he was the butterfly?

Maybe you are that dream person dreaming about you right now :)
