try putting the onion in the freezer 10-15 mins before you start chopping it, will help to reduce the tears and make it a more pleasant experience for you

I am guaranteed to cry when I chop white onion, so much so I usually have to stop chopping half way through. The large Spanish onions that we get in the UK seem to be the strongest in flavour. I am ok with red onion or spring onion, they never make me cry. White onion are my favourite as they have that kick to them, they almost taste acidic. The crying bit is almost part of the fan of making my stir-fry.

My grandma used to not cut the roots off until the end and she always said that helped her not cry
I also heard that if you chew gum while you cut it then it helps you not cry.
Another trick is to freeze it for a little while before you cut if up.
