I like Sogyal Rinpoche's take on it, "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying" which simplified many of the concepts for my pea brain.

I'm currently reading "The Tibetan book of Living and Dying" which is based on the the Tibetan book of the dead. It is very good, the author has written it to so that Tibetan traditional teachings are understood by an audience from the West.

Even when I am studying Buddhism, I haven't read it, but as Vinslave mentioned, Sogyal Rinpoche's book is a wonderful introduction to the actual Bardo Tödol ( The Tibetan Book of the Dead).
The Tibetan Book is highly complex, the images it describes are frightening and it must be read in the context of a culture that has devoted centuries to the study of the mind in practical situations (meditation). And a teacher to guide you in the reading is highly recommended for us westeners.
The wonderful teaching of it is that all that frightening images that appear after the physical death are a product of our own mind, our tendencies and our fears. In short, "heaven" and "hell" are only in the eye of the beholder. Or the mind, I should say

No, I can't say that I have. But I've read the Egyptian Book of the Dead. It was quite interesting.

I thought it had parallels to phenomena mentioned in other religious texts and some of those related to death and dying were striking in their similarity to cultures which evolved outside the Buddhist faith.

The History Channel recently did an interesting show on it, enough to get me to order if from amazon... we'll see!
