Excerpt from the last JD Powers Dependability study:
"The results are in for J.D. Power & Associates Vehicle Dependability Study and the research firm is reporting that the gap in long-term quality between luxury and high-volume vehicles has been cut in half over the last four years. J.D. estimates that the gap has narrowed from an average of 31 problems per 100 vehicles in its 2003 survey to just 15 in the most recent survey.
Though Lexus retained the top spot for the 12th straight year, other less luxurious nameplates are certainly gaining ground. Mercury, for instance, jumped six spots into the number two position, while Buick is right behind in third. Cadillac, another luxury automaker, secured the fourth spot, while Toyota rounds out the top five. "
This is a 3 year long study, & comes out every year,
the next one due out in August.
Here is the link to the last results :

You may note that out of the 12 manufacturers that are rated "above average".......It's a tie.....6 Foreign brands....6 domestic brands.
Out of the top 4 ...only 1 is foreign.
the above study proves that reputation & a handful of individual experiences are not the best indicators.
I prefer to cite facts.

I am sick of people saying that Honda and Toyota is the most reliable!! Look, any car will be the most reliable as long as long as you take care of it and don't treat it like a piece of s**t.

i for my area like our Hyundai, Santa Fe. The gasoline mileage isn't very sturdy, yet it performs. If one lives in tough terrain usa, it comes with the two automated & a handbook transmissions. 2 for the value of one! This handbook facet of the transmission is sizeable for hill usa. for the duration of undesirable climate you could placed the vehicle in 1st kit on the handbook facet and there is not any might desire to even touch the brakes while taking place very intense, steep hills. This 4x4 fairly works. Rides nicely and is reliable. If i did no longer want a coarse terrain vehicle, i might via a Toyota motor vehicle. all of them have super mileage and peform splendidly nicely. My son has a Toyota he bought new in 1986, 262,000 miles. He has dealt with it and that's particularly like new. The blue paint is dwindled, different than that it incredibly is powerful to bypass. Chevies was like that. Too undesirable.

Any car will be the most reliable car if you just take care of it. My family has owned plenty of different makes and models and they've never had a problem. It's because they take great care of their cars. My 93 mustang and 94 blazer ran just as good as my mom's 99 lexus and my dads 05 corvette. Take care of your car and it will take care of you.
The car with the most miles on it is currently a Volvo.

Any diesel car that is well taken care of. The Mercedes diesel from the 70s and 80s were almost indestructible. They are fairly simple, there are no computer controls to fail since there are no computers!

Mini Coopers have extremely good mileage but not that much space.
Vans and Hummers have lots of space but horrible mileage.
I think the Toyota Avalon is the best of both worlds.
