You are going to get a lot of different opinions on this, and most of them are going to be correct. There are many different gun manufacturers making excellent 9mm handguns today. The reason being is that the 9mm is the most widely used self-defense caliber in the world. To put in perspective, I use this analogy of handguns: The GLOCK would be considered the Toyota or Honda of pistols. They are reliable and low maintenance, relatively cheap, and widely available. You can depend on them to function most of the time without any problems. They are not as pretty or as accurate as some of the others, but they work almost without fail. The Sig Sauer is the Cadillac of the group. It is more accurate than a GLOCK and performs better. However, like a Cadillac, they cost more. The Beretta is between those two in terms of quality. It would be the Mustang of the bunch. It performs better than the GLOCK (Toyota) but breaks down more often, and it's not as expensive as the Sig Sauer (Cadillac), and it performs less efficiently than a Sig. I hope that comparison helped at least a little. I also hope it didn't seem TOO ridiculous to you. I know it's a little strange, but then again, so am I. Whatever you ultimately decide on, happy shooting to you.

Glock model 17 or 21

As a police officer we use glock 40 cal. But trained on glock 9mm. Here's why most dept use glock...dependability. You pick up a glock pull the trigger it fires, without fail. The are durable and dependable. They are relatively inexpensive, yeah alot of people will say spending alot more will get you higher quality. But for me, something that is dependable, easy to clean, relatively inexpensive, low recoil, and accurate the glock is my choice. They've fired glocks in sand, ice, rain, water, you name it truly the glock is the work horses of pistols. If you don't believe me, look at what your local law enforcement uses, 90% is glocks. It cant' all be a coincidence.

Ruger makes a fine firearm that will fill the requirements listed. They are large guns, but well made.

Accurate: Absolutely.
Reliable: Absolutely. Never had a misfeed or failure to fire or failure to eject with any of my Ruger handguns. Ever!
Rugged: Over-engineered, built like a tank.
Will last a lifetime: And then some. Lifetime warranty too.
Under $700: Well under that. Depending upon the gun and finish you choose, could be as little as $400.

Since you didn't mention size as a concern, I would definitely give Ruger a look.

I myself am an Glock fan. The 17 for full size or the 19 for mid size. I had a Springfield xd, but it isn't nearly as nice as a Glock.

Another great gun is the Smith and Wesson TSW series. But I'm not sure of the price anymore.

Taurus make a decent gun for a low price.

The Ruger semi-auto however, is CRAP! Ruger makes a tremendous rifle, revolver and Shotgun, but when it comes to there semi-auto center-fire handguns they SUCK!!!!!!

For under 700 I have a S&W9C, I'd prefer the SW99 or the Walther P99

Tanfoglio. Its a Italian gun maker. Known in the U.S as Witness. The best semi auto handguns in the world.

I own one, and I am VERY impressed with it. Much better than American made semi-autos. Not dissing the U.S, but the Italians really know how to make a quality semi-auto.

Click the link below and check them out. They perform even better than they look.
