i have a jack russell that recently started having violent seizures. the vet said this could be caused by a serious medical problem (brian tumor or liver problem) or could just be epilepsy whick commonly develops in small breed dogs. i've never heard of that and have owned several small dogs without this problem before. has anyone else ever heard of epilepsy commonly developing for no apparent reason in small breeds?

Epilepsy is common in Poodles, Belgian Teurverns, Labs and German Shepherds, Springers and many more med. to large breeds. Several breeds are involved in finding a genetic marker so they can weed out the carriers b4 breeding.I've done MinPin, small breeds, and Gsds rescue for many years and I've known 2 Gsds and 2 MinPins with it. My g/f's GSD lived to a ripe old age b4 having to go to the bridge. There are many websites for K-9 epilepsy including this one..

I've never heard it is related to size but rather to particular breeds. Cocker Spaniels are prone to epilepsy...... they (to me) are more of a mid size dog, rather than small. Good luck with your dog- hope he or she does well/
