I don't know how old you are, but when I was in high school 1977-1981, Sony came out with the coolest portable music box called a Walkman - it was a "small" cassette player you could only use headphones with, had a belt clip, was expensive and everyone had one or wanted one.

Anyway, even back then, the cable used to connect the Walkman to an amp or stereo to get sound through external speakers is the exact same cable used today for MP3's and Ipod portables. Why didn't car audio companies put that little external aux jack on car stereos back then??

Finally there are models out there for less than $150 that incorporate the external aux jack!!! Heck yes, that should be standard!

Some of us have other MP3 players, not iPods.

Some new cars, and some aftermarket car stereos now come with one of the following:
iPod connection
Aux input (connects to the MP3 player's headphone socket)
USB connector (connects to a generic MP3 player or memory bar)

However, it takes between 2 and 5 years to get a car from agreed specification to production, and cars have a production life of 5 to 10 years. This means that many cars currently available new were developed before the iPod.
Car manufacturers do not react quickly to trends like the iPod, as they do not know if the trend will last until the car start production (minidiscs didn't!).

Most new cars I have see do have them, but I think in the very near future, every middle-class car (eg. big name manufactures; Renault, Subaru, Audi) will have a jack socket, they are becoming very handy for all sorts of uses these days!

What if you don't have an iPod? People would want it removed, and want a discount for not having it. Keep it as an optional extra, makes more money!

...because audio enthusiasts who own cars, already have HDs wired into their audio system for better quality, without the wires hanging around.
