are jettas unreliable? should i buy a civic instead?

Don't believe all the hype. Jettas, as well as most all VWs are very reliable. Both hold their value well and are good cars. Jetta may be a little more feature packed and you may get more for your money. Hondas tend to be a little on the expensive side and not offer many thrills. It really comes down to which you like better or can get a better deal on.

According to consumer reports most VW's are very unreliable and most Hondas are.
I'd buy the Civic over the Jetta in a minute. But, I'd rather drive a Focus SVT, Mazda 3 or Altima over the Civic.

It depends on who you ask. I have a Jetta in my garage and have had not a problem in three years. I know people who have had problems with Hondas. Any given car can be a lemon or a champ. If you go by the averages though, Honda makes a more reliable car. Consumer reports and almost every car rag out there says so every year. In fact in its annual ranking of the reliability of car brands (measured by problems per 100 cars) Honda ranks near the top of the list under Lexus and Porsche. VW was near the bottom. That's not to say that you won't have good luck with a Jetta. You will probably have better luck with a Honda though.

Honda's are probably the most reliable cars out there. Civics are very good, and are probably better than Jettas.

I have heard Jettas are great, as I wanted one too but was told repair costs were crazy! I opted not to get it.

get the Honda. Their much more reliable and safe. They never break and they don't take much to maintain. You may pay more to begin with but without all the repair costs you'll save over time.
