I rejoice in his perfect love, these kids deserved it don't you think?
From The Holy Bible, 2 Kings 2:23-24:
"And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them"

Here is what Jesus had to say of little children:"But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
Suffer the little children to come to me,for of such,is the kingdom of God. (I think I quoted right)

I always find myself saying "go up, thou bald head". My boss just came into my office to ask me why I haven't completed a project. I said, "Because I'm on Y!A, so go up thou bald head and leave me alone." It worked.
I've seen fundies rationalize this bit of scripture by saying that by "little children" the bible really means young adults (so much for literal translations). And since these young adults made fun of a pious man then they deserve to be killed in a vicious manner.
I see also that the "go up" part has been translated by some fundies to mean that this guy's life was being threatened. (Sounds like a stretch to me.) So god sent the bears to save him because god protects his own, right? Well, what about the thousands of people who weren't protected and became martyrs?
By the way, the number 42 here wasn't put there accidentally. This is just another example of how the men who wrote the bible were just absolutely obsessed with the mystical qualities of numbers. So add numerology to the long list of silly things the bible contains.

Very good, and God wasn't fair when he chose Israel as his people and not the rest of the world; and he allowed Satan to rip Job apart; caused a flood that obviously destroyed men, women, and children, killed a guy for just touching the Tabernacle to steady it...
Either God is a monster or everyone of all ages and throughout time or he really does stand in condemnation before the Lord. Take your choice. You can either tell God he's in your seat or pick out a new wardrobe of sack cloth and ashes.

Atheist Jesus - If you are an atheist then why are you even making reference to this as most of you think the Bible is a fairy tale. It sounds like you believe this to be true. It sounds like you have a heart for these poor children of the bible.
I don't understand that scripture's meaning. It doesn't make sense to me. Maybe the kids were doing more than taunting Elisha. Maybe his life was in danger if there were 42 people harassing him, who knows. I don't. I wasn't there. Maybe the bears were just a coincidence. ??? This passage doesn't elaborate much on the circumstances so interpret it as you will.

Except that the actual words mean young men, such as late teens to early twenties. Now there are 42 young men taunting you along a lonely road with the threat of violence to God's prophet, when they so "Go up" they are talking about killing or having him go up to heaven like his teacher Elijah, so what do you think is going to happen, the man asks God to defend him and God comes through.
