What exactly qualifies as life? Would you consider Artificial Intelligence to be alive, assuming it was truly self-aware?

How do you feel about this and what is your religion's (or lack of) take on this?

Well, that's tough, I don't think plants are self aware, but they are alive.
Life means: growing, reproducing and metabolism, but in a way, fire has those attributes, too and is not alive. bacterias don't grow and they are alive.
But i think being able to reproduce is one of the most important features of life. So even if we create an android with self-awareness and emotions, we would have to treat it like a human being, but it still would not be alive, in the literal way!

Some computers (robots) already exhibit some characteristics of self-awareness. This is still a long way from the self-awareness a human has.. It's a good possibility for the future. Our brains are "wet" computers so it's probably just a matter of time between hardware and software make the right combination.

the day we create computers with human consciousness is the day we create artificial beings that should get rights.

I don't think so.

Consciousness is something only possible with the requisites of a brain and, most importantly, a soul.

The soul is something immaterial, and "Artificial Intelligence" devices are made exclusively of matter (chips, cables, current, and so on).

"We are nowhere near building an intelligent machine. You can't think unless you can feel, and we have no way to give computers emotions." (David Gelernter, a Jewish professor of computer science at Yale who creates software that enables machines to "think.")

I think this depends on whether a computer and another computer can come together to create a third computer. As long as humans are involved in the creation of a computer the answer must be no.

In other words, without procreation there is no life as such.

Then the artificial intelligence will have to be like us. But they cannot be like us because they need programmes and we are the ones who put the programmes inside.
