My grandmama and father are the worst cooks/grillers ever. I've never told my grandma but I have told my father he sucks. He doesn't take the criticism well.

Anyways, My grandmama in particular has obviously been cooking for years. Isn't it about time she realizes that her cooking blows? IT IS SO BAD and everyone knows it. She has gotten people sick in the past from serving crap that is expired.

Why don't rude people realize that they are rude?

Seriously, your diplomatic skills suck, and your tact blows. Telling your grandmother and father that their cooking doesn't suit your delicate little palate is about as rude as rude gets. If you can't appreciate the meal, at least you could appreciate the fact that they've put the effort into preparing it for you. And if your grandmother's cooking is so bad that it makes you sick, find some POLITE excuse not to be around at mealtimes.

I will say that you're right about one thing -- not everybody is a five star cordon bleu chef, and some people can't cook to save their lives. But that doesn't give you the right to insult them or be rude to family members.

I've not had one. My parents have had a few though! When my folks had just gotten married, they were living in an apartment. My mom had eggs cooking in the pot (for hard boiled I guess), and she and my dad had to run out. My mom totally forgot that she had left the stove on, and when she came home, the eggs were on the ceiling! There was another time they were having guests over, and they had a roast in the oven. The oven fire never caught, and the gas backed up and the roast shot out of the oven and smacked against the dining room wall!

Well it's not just cooks. The same is true for writers, artists, musicians, and just about anybody really.

That's because we're always surrounded by people who tell us what we want to hear rather than tell us the truth. From parents, to friends, to teachers. These days even bosses don't tell their employees that they're doing a bad job. You just don't get promoted, but it's not often that you actually get told something negative.

This happens when people get older. In the "old days", steaks were cooked one way, well done. They grew up with this and can't imagine any other way to cook. I didn't know steak had flavor until I was 19 and had one done medium rare. My Mother had really good cutlery, and she needed it for her meat dishes. Most older folks grew up with bad cooking and think it is good. You are most likely not going to change that.

Give her a break...maybe her taste buds are not working properly. Especially if she smokes alot.

Maybe she has never been taught to throw things that expire out. I know that when they get older they tend to hang onto things including tainted can goods and such.

It is best if you are afraid of her cooking that when you go to visit you take her and yourselves out to eat, instead of criticizing.

I guess it is called being polite and respectful to your Grandmother. She probably takes a lot of pride and puts a lot of time into what she cooks, and people don't want to hurt her feelings.

Oh.. and I'm a hugely crappy cook.... and proud of it. Hell, even if it comes in a packet with explicit instructions, I'll find some way to ruin it.

So.... see? Not all of us are afraid to admit it! : )

Wow! She's gotten people sick? Lol. That IS bad.

Sometimes people don't have a good sense of smell and/or they don't taste flavors in foods so it would be impossible for them to know what tastes good.

I probably wouldn't eat there or if I did, I would bring something and mostly eat from that. :)

maybeno one wants to hurt her feelings. Over the years it builds up. Myabe someone needs to teach her to check dates on give new recipes. OR better yet let someone else make dinenr one night. Switch off so everyone gets to cook.

Sounds like she needs a course in food safety. You could get some pamphlets and even a cookbook with easy grill recipes to her.

No one is brave or rude enough to speak up. Maybe if you were to suggest something then she would get the idea but not be so hurt.
