Actually, animated movies like Pocahontas can fit both the animated genre and musical genre. To be a musical, all you need is the story driven by songs; and most of these Disney (and other) films can fulfill that requirement. But genre placement is pretty subjective, so some people might just classify it as either an animated movie or an animated musical (rather than a strict musical). Personally, I'd call it an animated musical, since the animated format takes greater precedence over the music.

Cheers!! :)

It's a musical in itself; all Disney movies are driven through song. If you're thinking of casting a play with real people and just singing, then it would probably take on the form of The Lion King on Broadway (only Pocahantas wouldn't be as entertaining....in my opinion anyway). But almost all Disney Classics movies would be in the musical/animation class.

Disney has actually started turning their animated films into theatrical musicals. Check out this website: http://disney.go.com/theatre/#news_disneytheatrical_04102007
Also, they have a series of musical for elementary schools that are directly from the animated movies..Aladdin Jr. the musical, for instance. (I saw it...ADORABLE.) They use the same songs as in the movie and they are characterized as musicals. So, even though they haven't yet created a musical on Broadway for Pocahontas, I'm sure they will soon and I'm sure you could still use the songs. The songs in that movie are great and will really showcase your voice. Good luck!!

If you're talking about the Disney movie, yes, that is a musical. If you're just talking about the story of Pocahontas and the live-action movie about her with Colin Farrell in it, no.

It is a Musical. However, it is not Musical Theatre. It's almost like the people who refer to Moulin Rouge as a Musical. It is clearly not Musical Theatre.
