No, you don't understand. Based on the lack of evidence, I see no reason to believe in a god. I lack belief. It's not quite the same thing as saying that I have a belief that there is no god.
Atheism is a belief like not collecting stamps is a hobby. It's the ground state.

Personally, I avoid using the word "belief" for any reason. Belief literally means to accept a positive assertion (God exists.) as true without requiring collaborating evidence. This is a deliberate form of intellectual self-deception, which I reject absolutely. Any person who's taken an elementary course in logic understands that it is utterly impossible to prove a negative assertion (God does not exist.) and no reasonable atheist would even bother to try such foolishness. I KNOW there is no physical God because those who assert that He exists have failed utterly to provide any evidence of His existence in objective reality. Please note that, unlike the vast majority of my fellow atheists, I am willing to accept that God does exist in a believer's subjective experience and on a printed page. Nevertheless, until someone provides evidence of God's existence in objective (physical) reality, I will continue to KNOW that He does not exist. A wild-eyed believer's unsubstantiated assertion does not change the nature of an absolute objective truth.

Yeah, it's a belief. Stop yelling! Disbelief is a form of belief. Ya happy?
That said, it's a rational disbelief, a response to irrational theism. That's not necessarily a condemnation of theism; but it's a fact. Most Christians would admit that there is no rational evidence of God - hence the necessity of "faith," the "evidence of things unseen." Only the very lowest of imbeciles tries to argue that the banana (e.g.) "proves" God.

Semantics and circular logic, don't ya luv it?
As an atheist I agree. It's a belief system like anything else.
If I tell u there is a teapot orbiting the sun just beyond Venus, would you not be an atheist about that?

I believe there is no God the same way there is no tooth fairy. Your statement is accurate for me.
But not all atheists believe that. Some simply don't know, but there has been no ecvidence to support a God hypothesis yet.
I will say *I* believe ther is no God. But I will not speak for all atheists and say they believe there is no God.
And I second what eri said.

If it makes you happy, you stick with that belief.
Ok, I'll expand on that. It may be a belief, but it is not a belief system. There may be common threads among atheists, but there is no unifying force. No handbook. No secret handshake. No uniform. No rules or regulations.
Atheism - the UNreligion!

Lack of belief is a belief. But my lack of belief is based upon a lack of evidence, rather than blind faith.
And your point would be?
One more thing-I would never say 'y'all.' It's not an actual word.

My stupid friend believes it's 5.
I accept that it's 4
He has no evidence to support his belief that it's 5.
I accept the mountain of evidence that says it's 4
There is positive evidence that there is no deity: everything that God is supposed to have done, or to do today, can be shown to have more parsimonious and sensible alternative causes. The absence of any requirement for a deity in order to explain the universe, God is clearly redundant and absent.
