If not, which modern powers are known to currently (if only occassionally) hire such help? Thanks

I only ask as an old neighbour of mine from a few years back was adamant that in the late nineties he had gone over to Israel to fight for them for a couple of years to 'further the Israeli cause'. He was white, British, and definitely not Jewish, with a background in Army communications.

Israel had one of the best trained and best equipped militaries in the entire world. I do NOT believe they hire mercenaries.
However as with most militaries, USA included, they DO allow foreign nationals to serve in their military. Service in the military aids you in achieving citizenship as well. (once again, USA included)

In the late 1990s there was no need for any white British guys to go over and help the Israelis, they were and still are well able to take care of themselves, sounds like the old duffer is another walter-mitty wannabe.
The Israeli military have never used mercenaries.

I do not know. And I think such things are "classified information" Do we really have to discuss or debate that ?
However, when I remember the 90 minutes at Entebbe I think they are well equipped and qualified. Otherwise they could have been wiped out by their current enemy.

Yes they do, they're called the American and British armies. The Israeli army can't fight their way out of a paper bag, as they showed in Lebanon recently.

Sorry, the British have the best trained military personnel as we train the other countries army's.... They learn of our guys... So who is the best in the world? Defiantly ain't Israel.

Why should they they are more powfull than most European contries. Only the third world countries as well as most of the Muslim countries such as Iran,Iraq,Syria etc.This is a known fact they just cannot fight their own battles.

It is possible that your neighbor was there, though probably not as a mercenary.
I imagine he would have wanted to be able to defend himself considering the area.
