a port is a type of wine. it tends to be a regular fermented wine, but a bit sweeter and fruitier, and fortified, meaning a spirit is added. this is usually brandy. so ports have a higher alcohol content by volume as well.

Theyr'e right it is fortified, but also aged above ground usually in sheds in oak casks. This is what gives it a stronger heavier taste.
