I have a small problem. normally I would wear a business suit to an interview but I had surgery on my shoulder and I cannot wear a business suit because I am unable to put my arms over my head and I would be unable to zip up the dress w/a zipper in the back.
The interview is at a banking firm so the dress is very business. I am unsure what to wear. I have a black shirt dress that is below the knee. Would that be acceptable? Or just wear a button up shirt and dress pants?

I would say wear the dress pants. Explain your temporary physical limitation and how it impacted your clothing choice for the day. Interviewers are human, too.... I am sure they will understand.
Best of luck to you!

I think the shirt dress would be perfectly acceptable, but here is a possible solution to your zipper problem. Hook a safety pin into the zipper and tie a string on it. Step into the dress, draw the string up over your shoulder and try zipping it that way. Depending on how restricted your movement is, this might work. Good luck on the interview.

I would wear dress pants and a button up shirt for the interview. I think that would look better than a black shirt dress. If the interviewee comments on how you dressed, explain to him the situation.

Button up shirt with dress pants and nice shoes would be fine. Don't wear the shirt dress. Maybe after you get the job you can wear that. But until then, stick with the dress shirt and pants. Good luck!

just explain that you would have come more proffesionally dressed however you just had surgery and you cannot lift your arms over your head and wear the button up shirt and dress pants . I am sure they will understand but do mention the fact of your surgery . good luck and I hope you get the job .

If you explain to them about your surgery, you won't look foolish. Also, I don't know how your black shirt dress looks, but when in doubt, go with dress pants. If you think that your black dress shirt looks professional and crisp, then you can wear that.

Do you have an actual suit? Not something that zips up the back but a tailored jacket and skirt or pants? That would be optimal (in a dark color of course, such as navy, black or brown).

You could run a long piece of string (not thread) through the zipper and use that to pull up the zipper for yourself. Just like a wet suit. I would recommend it as you want to set the best impression you can.

Get the friend to help you. Critical to dress properly for a bank interview and the suit is the only way to go. Not slacks EVER!!!!!
