It stands for kilo-volt-amperes. It is a unit of electrical power. It is simply the number of kilovolts across a circuit multiplied by the current (in amps) through the same circuit BUT without regard for the phase of either the voltage or the current (in AC circuits).
kVA is similar to kW (kiloWatts), but in the case of kW only the portion of the AC current that is in-phase with the voltage is multipled with the voltage to get kW.
So, you can get some kVA numbers that are higher than kW numbers, especially if the current is way out of phase with the voltage. In extreme cases of pure capacitance and pure inductance, the current is 90 degrees out of phase, so the power in kW is actually zero, while the power in kVA is kilovolts * amps.
