...sometimes like wildfire, leaving nothing left to burn. Why is it so hard (or frequently impossible) to take a backwards step to settle into a stage of relationship that is more stable and comfortable?

That's just it: You CAN'T step backward. Like my friend Gordon & i say, "If you hear something you can never un-hear it and if you see something you can never un-see it." By the same token, once you've done something you can't undo it. Controled growth must be practiced. If you put the cart before the horse in anything in life it just won't work AND leaves you with a flabergasted horse. Stable and comfortable is when things really get deep and start rocking you just have to arrange it so you can get there without scortching everything. Then it's just dead and no amount of propping it up or putting fresh paint on it is going to make it anything less than the burnt out, hollow shell that the two have reduced it to.
