The problem is that cigarettes are so readily available to me that it's very tough and willpower and thinking of my health apparently aren't enough. Any suggestions for mind tricks or tips or substitutions I can try?

I quit 29 months ago, all my friends are smokers and most people I work with are also. First you have to be sure you are totally ready to quit, no doubts, otherwise it wont work. Get the patch, I used it for about 3 weeks just so I could adjust as a nonsmoker before going thru withdrawl. Keep telling yourself you can do it, make it exciting, like a goal to see how many hours you can go w/o one. Dont go into with dread, it defeats you. D/L a quit meter, they really help. Need more help you can email me. Good Luck..YOU CAN DO THIS..DO IT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE

My mom died of circulatory illness. When they told her on her second leg bypass that if she didn't quit cigs they'd have to amputate sooner than later. She got mad and insisted on going to another doctor, who told her pretty much the same way, but he was nice and "haaaandsome!"
She got the 2nd bypass at 74, then quit smoking after the several days in hospital, lived with me for 4 more years, then had to go to nursing home for TIA's, caused by smoking according to the Drs. She ate bacon, sausage, ham, hot dogs and candy and got little exerrcise,, but the Dr's only blamed her Cigarettes.
She died after a stroke. Her last 10 years of life were limited quite a lot by her moderate smoking.
She was also legally blind for 15 yrs. from glaucoma, but her friend tried to get her to smoke Mari, but she wouldn't.
There were 4 or 5 leg amputees in wheelchairs at the nursing home out in the courtyard, still chain smoking.

I'd say try those patches or gum or anything you can, then get bitchy with your mate and insist s/he smoke outside.

Get physical and breathe deep, and good luck. It's worth the effort.

That's rough/ This is my 11th day without cigarettes... Even though I don't live with smokers, most of my friends in my apartment complex smoke and I miss sitting outside with them and smoking and talking...

You could ask them to smoke outside, not in the house. Or ask them to quit with you.

I know it is really hard to stop smoking when you see people around you smoking.
So it is up to you to be strong and want to quit for your own well being. Why not ask the other person to smoke outside. Tell them you really want to quit and ask their help. Try to do this without being argumentative.

use Google images and look up photos of lung cancer...
and think of your lungs looking like that every time you pick up a ciggarette
also think about yourself coughing up bits of black and bloody lung everytime you want to smoke one..
keep hard candies around *sugar free* and eat/suck on one everytime you want a ciggarette
its certainly kept me from smoking.lol
