When he's with you, it's a 2-person relationship, and he's trying to handle it in a way that he thinks will make you happy. In a way, he IS sweet; he just doesn't realize tht he's acting fake. He hasn't figured out yet how to be 'himself' in a relationship.
When he's with other people, it's a many-person relationship, and he'll act differently. If you pay attention, you'll notice that he'll act differently around ANY group, not just his friends. Around his friends, maybe he's an ***. Around his family, maybe he's moody or confrontational or angry. Around YOUR family he's polite and charming. Again, he's not being 'himself', he's acting a role.
Best thing to do (with your next guy) is to try to reward sincerity (not SWEET) whenever you can. Help him to grow comfortable being himself all the time, and you'll have fun being with who he IS, not who he pretends to be.
{Side note: It's not a 'guy' thing. Girls do exactly the same thing, but in ways that are less comparable to a mule's hind-end.}

Guys like approval from their friends. If your boyfriend's friends see him being sweet and sappy to you, chances are he will be harrassed and teased later. They expect to see him acting in the way he always has with them. It has absolutely nothing to do with you so don't take it personally. It's just a guy thing.

Agreed. Usually, guys try to act "cool", as they belief, to be in the "in" crowd with their friends.
So that when they totally ignore their partners, family etc. and to the latter, they seem really nasty.
A lot of guys also want to impress their partners, but by trying, they seem to only make it worse.
Ignore your boyfriend when he is doing that.

There's a guy for you. They're big babies until they get with their friends, then they have to act like Mr. Macho Testosterone. I aksed my BFF (who is a guy) why guys act like this, and he told me that its cuz he doesnt wanna appear to be "whipped" by his girlfriend in front of his friends. Guys are really shallow.

Not all guys are like that. Find the one who kisses you and holds your hand in front of his friends. Find the one who integrates you into his social circle. Those are the only ones worthy of our attention ;)

he's gotta be Mr. Coolguy in front of his "boys", then as soon as they leave he's super sweet and stuff.
Tell him to grow up.
