I allow the auto-update utility to download the updates but all it does is search my HD for the updates, because I have already done this (close to 15 times) so I assume the updates have already been downloaded from Microsoft's site. The utility then asks me to install the some 72 critical updates I need for my service pack 2 machine. (I just recently reformatted the machine due to an excess of garbage files on my HDD) The utility goes along for a little bit, then a pop-up appears and says the following updates could NOT be installed, and it lists the some 70 updates I just chose to install. After this the "Updates are ready for your computer" box appears, and I choose to download the updates and the process starts all over again. Can anyone help me? I figure I'm fluent with computers, but this just throws me. Maybe the downloads go to a certain directory I could just delete and allow the utility to re-download them?

I bet your memory is too low. You need at least 1 GB for todays applications. I would bet you have only 512K

Could be because of a variety of reasons such as:
-corrupt installer files
-incorrect time on your computer
-invalid or corrupt Active X
etc.

Perhaps you are trying to download too much at once. Just try and install 2 or 3 updates and see if that works. If not, Microsoft does provide free support when it comes to security update problems.

• Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are associated with security updates.

Just download a couple updates though Windows Update at a time and, if needed, let the computer download the stuff overnight.

i know the site shouldnt let you even download the updates if you dont have admin rights but this sounds a lot like you dont have enough permissions to install

Is your copy of xp registerred. If you are working with an unregistered copy of XP then updates will not load properly, its looking for authentication. If you just reinstalled it, try reregistering it first.

If you have a legitimate copy of windows xp.. then try reinstalling it. you might have lost some drivers for some reason.
