I always wake up in the middle of the night with a VERY itchy throat, nose, and ears. I also notice that during these attacks my soft palate becomes bumpy and I can run my tongue over it and it feels like sand paper. It drives me absolutely insane... It is the bane of my existence. I take Claratin and spray cloroseptic which calms it down only slightly but still drives me nuts. What can I do to stop this?

Try to get honey that's made in your local area. You become immune to the pollen through eating it. It works for me every summer

I believe you're suffering from sleep apnea. After sleep begins, your jaw muscles relaxes till your mouth falls open. Airflow begins to move through your mouth, because this becomes the path of least resistance. This airflow inflames your throat AND nasal passages to the point that it may even stop the flow of air during sleep. You may also find that during these nightly episodes, your body temperature rises between 3 to 5 degrees and drops rapidly (withing minutes) of your waking.

After a time of repeated activity, your sinuses will be affected by the apnea condition, which will then cause the soft tissue in your nasal passages move and block the flow of air during sleep, which also forces you to breathe through you mouth.

I had the same thing for years until I determined the cause.
Now I sleep with a device that keeps my mouth from coming open during sleep. The manufacturers promises that this will allow the tisue to heal. I've had good results with it. I coupled that treatment with use of antioxidants.

The other alternative, which I chose not to do, is to go to a sleep apnea clinic (or a nose, ear and throat specialist) to be tested for sleep apnea. They typically keep you overnight and observe your sleep. If you do have apnea, they will prescribe a machine with a tube you place in or over your mouth and or nose during sleep. I didn't want that so I avoided taking the test and opted for the alternative I outlined.

I should also mention that I tried several internists, and a chiropractor in my efforts to address my condition, which was also accompanied with pain in my neck and along my arms (specially on my left side) as well as a lot of stomach problems. After years of seeing doctors, one of them noticed my sinus problem and suggested that I go for the sleep apnea tests. That's when I began to figure out what what happening.

However, I could be wrong about your particular case, so I highly recommend that you see a doctor.

Take Benadryl. It is an anti-histamine which should help stop some of the symptoms or at least lessen the affects.
