Because it's no one's business how much a person makes. Plus people tend to judge a person's worth by how much they make. And really, wouldn't you rather be judged by your contributions to society versus your pay check? Some of the lowest paid jobs such as teacher make the biggest impact. And yet celebrities receive all the attention.

People are judgmental. Like others have said, some people will judge another based on how much money they make or how much debt they have. The big deal is that...it's not anybody else's business.

This has been a traditional issue with people's salaries. Most people don't want anyone to know what they make because it sets them in a certain Status. just like in other cultures where you are judge by your assets. We in America don't like to be put in to categories let alone be in a low status. Even if we are poor we don't like to look it. Its all image

I was always taught it is rude to question other people about money. How much money a person makes and how they spend it is their personal business. Polite people do not ask personal questions. Call me old-fashioned I guess.

In polite society, it's considered crass and boorish to talk about personal financial issues. My income is none of anyone's business other than mine.
Why would I want to inform others of those facts ?
